Jigawa State House of Assembly has removed Jahun Local Government
Area chairman, Alhaji Musa Harbu, and suspended two others for alleged
misconduct and negligence of duty.
Those suspended include chairmen of Gumel and Birniwa local government councils, Alhaji Muhammed Bunde and Alhaji Alhassan Babandi, respectively.
Vanguard gathered the House on June 24 this year, constituted an adhoc committee to investigate the activities of the 27 local government council chairmen in the state.
Presenting the report in the House, the committee recommended the immediate removal of Jahun council chairman from the office for alleged misconduct and negligence of duty, based on the provision of section 9 of Local Government Councils Law chapter 18 law of Jigawa State 2012.
The committee further recommended that Birniwa and Gumel local governments council’s chairmen be suspended for misconduct, dereliction of duty and failure to comply with provisions of local government appropriation law.
The chairman of the Committee, Musa Sule Dutse, also disclosed that 10 local councils chairmen were found wanting by the committee, adding that they failed to defend themselves before the committee.
He pointed out that the cases of the remaining 17 local government chairmen were still under investigation.
The committee also recommended that the two council chairmen should remain suspended until conclusion of further investigation by the assembly.
Vanguard reports that the sitting, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Garba, adopted the report and pronounced the immediate removal and suspension of the three council chairmen.
In a quick reaction to the decision, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state said it would seek legal interpretation of the verdict in court.
Chairman of the state PDP, Alhaji Salisu Mamuda Kuit, described the decision of the state lawmakers as barbaric and an injustice.
